JC5 Class Routines

Reading

The children should bring their reading book to school each day.  They have created their own reading journals to record what and when they have read.  These should be added to every day.  Children also have space to respond to their reading using a menu of suggested activities.  These can be found on the inside cover of their journal. We expect children to read for a minimum of 15 minutes every night and for this to include reading to an adult at least once a week. Please sign and date your child’s reading journal and feel free to add any comments regarding their reading.

Children are encouraged to read books from home alongside their school reading book.  Children will be given the opportunity to visit the school library on a fortnightly rota.

Maths and English Homework

Homework is given out on a Friday and needs to be completed for Thursday the following week.  Homework activities are:

  • Daily reading including 1 big task and 2 'comment tasks' from the reading choice menu.

  • Times tables practice.  It is best to complete a set each day so that there is regular practice of times tables to help them stick!  There will be a weekly times tables test on a Friday also. Times Table Rockstars is a great resource to learn and practise times table facts.

Helping your child at home

Times Tables

It is important to keep practising times tables to retain and improve fluency of recall.  The homework sheets will help with this, but there are many other games and websites that can support children in their learning. Each child has a log in for Times Table Rockstars and are encouraged to use this fantastic resource to help pracitse their times tables: https://ttrockstars.com/

Spellings

Children often enjoy different and multi-sensory ways to learn their spellings alongside the 'Look, Say, Cover, Write and Check' method.  Please see the document below for some suggested approaches and activities for supporting the learning of spelling.

Reading

Please support your child with reading as much as you can!  Them reading to you, you to them, listening to audiobooks, reading to a sibling - it all counts!  All their reading and any responses they want to make to their reading can be put into their reading journal - children generally really enjoy completing the little tasks and coming up with lots of creative ideas!
