Things we are looking forward to in Hedgehog Class this term:
We have an exciting and busy term ahead, filled with memorable learning experiences and special events. We are looking forward to celebrating World Book Day on 5th March. We have a number of inspiring music workshops with The Big Sing and RockSteady. Our very own school Literature Festival will bring a love of reading to life, including two special author visits. As part of our PSHE learning, we will enjoy SCARF workshops and a visit from Harold the Giraffe to help us explore wellbeing and healthy choices. Later in the term, we are excited for our trip to the British Motor Museum with Badger Class and a delicious Easter cooking session. With so much planned, Hedgehog Class is sure to have a fantastic and incredibly busy term!
Hedgehogs’ is our Year 1 and Reception class and is taught by Miss Karasinski.
Our Learning focus this term is, ‘By The Sea’.
Welcome to Spring Term in Hedgehogs! We are a welcoming and small mixed aged class.
This term is History we will be learning all about the Titanic and ‘What made the Titanic famous'? We will be thinking about the journey of the Titanic, looking at a timeline of key events and also be thinking about life in the past and learning about the people and life on board this famous ship. This follows on from our ‘By The Sea’ Geography focus last term when we learnt about features of coasts and beaches.
Hedgehogs all love phonics. Year 1s are currently learning alternative Phase 5 sounds and preparing for the Phonics Screening check. Receptions are continuing to learn Phase 3 phonic sounds and words.
We are enthusiastic learners and love to show our learning through structured activities as well as continuous provision.
For full details of our learning this term, please see our Termly Overview below.

In Hedgehog Class we love learning! We are incredibly lucky to be able to offer both children in Year R and Year 1 continuous provision. We have a bright open classroom as well as our own outside area. We have our own on-sight forest school, which we use every week with Mrs Monkhouse, our Forest School Lead.
We do Phonics, Maths and English every morning. All other Curriculum Subjects are taught across the week in the afternoons.
Hedgehog Class Routines
Reading
Children get two new reading books every week, you need to read each book three times. This improves phonics, expression and comprehension. Please write in your child's reading record book when you have read, and send them in with their reading folder daily. Reading books will be changed once a week on a Friday in preparation for the new week.
PE/Physical Development
Our PE day is Friday. Children can come into school wearing PE kits.
Forest School
Every Thursday morning we have Forest School with Mrs. Monkhouse. Your child will need to come into school wearing sensible clothes/layers. Your child will also need a pair of wellies in school. We provide waterproof coats and trousers. For the afternoon, children will need to get changed into school uniform, so please send this in with them every Thursday.
Library
Once a week we visit our school library and the children choose a book to bring home to share with an adult. We are not expecting the children to be able to read these books, they are to promote reading for pleasure and give the children the opportunity to read different text genres.
Helping your child at home
Your child will bring home a reading folder every night. In the folder you will find:
A reading book. Yr1 Children will have spellings for the week containing the phonic sounds they have been learning at school. YrR Children will have a phonics pencil case containing flash cards of phonic sounds and harder to read and spell words.
Please read every night with your child. Ask the child to tell you what sounds they can see "c-a-t" and encourage them to blend the sounds together "cat" to hear the word "cat". This will click but can take some time, if your child cannot blend yet help them by blending the word yourself. Click here for the ELS phonics Parent Support.
