Welcome to Otters’ Class Page

On this page you can find out about our learning in class and enjoy looking at pictures of us!

Otters is our Year 4 class, taught by Mrs Caselin.

Our Learning this Term:

Welcome to Spring Term in Otters! We are a small, welcoming and enthusiastic group of learners.

This term our English work will be based around the book ‘How to Live Forever’ by Colin Thompson. We will be exploring ways to improve our writing and use creative and adventurous vocabulary. Otters all love reading and this term our class reader is ‘Magic can be Dangerous’ by B.Ware, ahead of the author’s visit to our school on Monday 9th March as part of our Literature Festival week.

We have an exciting calendar of music events this term as well, with our second visit from Ben from Longborough Opera House as part of our preparation for our whole-trust Hansel and Gretel performance. Rocksteady are also visiting us on Monday 2nd March to give us a taster of what band-lessons will look like at St. James’ and Ebrington. Additionally, Otters are very fortunate to have the opportunity to go to the Cidermill Theatre on Friday 10th March to see a performance of ‘The Carnival of the Animals’ composed by Camille Saint-Saëns.

We are still busy practising our times tables to get really speedy and to help us have fun along the way, we have exciting Times Tables Rockstar Tournaments set up.

For full details of our learning this term, please see our Termly Overview.

You can find blank homework sheets on this webpage, along with some additional activities your child may like to do to help them learn their spellings.

Otters’ Class Routines

Reading

We expect children to read for a minimum of 15 minutes every night and for this to include reading to an adult regularly - ideally three times a week. Please sign and date your child’s reading journal and do add any comments regarding their reading.

Books and reading records need to be in school every day. The children are responsible for choosing their own reading book from the coloured band recommended by their teacher. Children are encouraged to read books from the book corner, Chipping Campden Library (which we visit termly) or from home alongside their banded reading book. Children also have the opportunity to visit the school library on a fortnightly rota.

Maths Homework

Times Table homework will be set every Monday and will be due in on the Friday.  Children are also encouraged to use Times Table Rockstars to improve their times table knowledge.

Helping your child at home

Times Tables

It is important to keep practising times tables to retain and improve fluency of recall.  The homework sheets will help with this, but there are many other games and websites that can support children in their learning. Each child has a log in for Times Table Rockstars and are encouraged to use this fantastic resource to help pracitse their times tables: https://ttrockstars.com/

Reading

Please support your child with reading as much as you can!  Them reading to you, you to them, listening to audiobooks, reading to a sibling - it all counts!  All their reading and any responses they want to make to their reading records.

Spellings

Children often enjoy different and multi-sensory ways to learn their spellings alongside the 'Look, Say, Cover, Write and Check' method.  Below is also a ‘Spelling Menu’ that has some additional activities that may help support your child to learn their spellings.

‘Be curious, love learning and grow together with respect.’
